2013 Feast of the Holy Annunciation and Greek Independence Day

The Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church in Wilkes-Barre observed the feast of the Holy Annunciation of the Theotokos and Greek Independence from the Ottoman Turks (1821), both of which are commemorated on March 25th.  On Sunday, March 24th following Orthros (Matins) and Liturgy for the Sunday of Orthodoxy, the parish hosted a dinner to celebrate both feasts.  Dr. Argyrios Varonides, a professor at the University of Scranton and our parish's "Psaltis" (chanter), was the main speaker.  On Monday, March 25th, Fr. Gabriel Nicholas held Orthros and Liturgy for the feast of the Holy Annunciation.  Following the liturgy, parishioners and Luzerne County officials proceeded to the courthouse for a Greek flag raising ceremony.  Parishioner Maggie Asimakopoulos spoke during the ceremony.  The parish would like to thank the speakers and all who attended both events to help us commemorate our parish's feast day.
